In 2007-2008 Mr. Catana made his Italian debut at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna as Paolo in Simon Boccanegra, sang his first Conte di Luna in Il trovatore in Toledo, returned to Italy as Diomede in Lauro Rossi’s Cleopatra at the 2008 Macerata Festival, and made his professional recording debut as Iago in Otello with Friedrich Haider and the Oviedo Philharmonic on the PHILARTIS label.
In the 2010-2011 season Mr. Catana will debut Parma as Ezio in Attila, the Salzburg Festival as Macbeth with Riccardo Muti, L’Opéra de Lyon as Miller in Luisa Miller, Palm Beach Opera in the title role of Nabucco, I due Foscari in Trieste, and Il trovatore in Hong Kong. Future engagements include his role debut as Scarpia in a new production of Tosca at Opera Leipzig and his return to Lausanne as Ford in Falstaff. In the 2009-2010 season Mr. Catana’s performances included his debut in Torino as Miller in Luisa Miller, the title role of Macbeth with the Bayerische Rundfunk Orchester and his Frankfurt Opera debut in the title role of Verdi’s Nabucco.
In the 2008-2009 season he returned to the Metropolitan for Schaunard in La bohème, made his debut in Lausanne as Germont in La traviata, and joined the roster of the San Francisco Opera for La traviata. Mr. Catana made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Schaunard in 2003 under the baton of Daniel Oren. Since that time he has been heard in the house in many supporting roles in Carmen, Madama Butterfly, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Ka’tá Kabonová, Rigoletto, Don Carlo, La Forza del Destino and I vespri siciliani. He continues with regular performances of Schaunard and made his debut as Valentin in Faust at the Met in the Parks in 2007.
Mr. Catana made his role debut as Enrico in Lucia de Lammermoor at the Virginia Opera, made his role debut as Il Conte Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro at the Baltimore Opera, joined Eve Queler in an all Verdi Concert at Weill Recital Hall in New York singing arias and duets with Aprile Millo and Francisco Casanova, and performances of Marcello in La bohème with the Seattle Opera Young Artist Program. He made his operatic debut in April 2001 as Thoré in Meyebeer's Les Huguenots at Carnegie Hall with the Opera Orchestra of New York. He returned to Carnegie Hall for his oratorio in Schubert’s Mass in G with the Manhattan Symphony in 2003-2004. Other engagements have included Rolando in Verdi's La battaglia di Legnano with the Opera Orchestra of New York in a special concert performance in Toluca, Mexico, and the title role in Mozart's Don Giovanni with the Baltimore Opera Studio.
Sebastian Catana has participated in the young artist programs of Seattle Opera and Baltimore Opera, and has consequently been awarded prizes and awards in vocal competitions such as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, First Prize in the 2006 Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation Voice Competition, Second Prize in the 2007 Giulio Gari Foundation International Voice Competition, Second Prize in the 2006 Loren L. Zachary Society National Vocal Competition, a career grant from the 2006 Elardo Foundation International Voice Competition, First Prize in the 2003 Opera Index Competition, First Prize in the 2004 New Jersey State Opera International Voice Competition, Second Prize in the 2001 Jensen Foundation Competition for Opera Singers, a study grant from the 2002 and 2004 Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation Voice Competition, First Prize in the 2000 Connecticut Opera Competition, Sixth Prize in the 2000 Palm Beach Opera Competition, a grant from the Lee Schaenen Foundation and the Liederkranz Foundation, and was selected as one of the 10 finalists in the 2004 International Italian Opera Competition organized by Dresden Semperoper Theater in Germany.
