Sharleen Joynt
Soprano
Praised by the New York Times and Opera Canada for her "bright" and "feathery" voice, coloratura soprano Sharleen Joynt has been labelled one to watch. Originally from Ottawa, Canada, she currently lives in New York and graduated in May from the Mannes College of Music with her Masters degree in Voice Performance.
Sharleen has a love for all classical styles, and is equally at home in Baroque and Contemporary music. She has performed many of Bach's Cantatas and Mozart's Concert Arias. Operatic roles include Amy in the Israeli premiere of Adamo's Little Women, Constance in Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites, Damon in Handel's Acis and Galatea, Madame Herz in Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor, Fire, Princess, and Rossignol in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges, and Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. In the 2009-2010 season she sang Amy in Little Women and La Fee in Cendrillon at the Calgary Opera. This season, Miss Joynt will make her European debut at Theater Dessau in Germany and she will make her Metropolitan Opera debut in the production of Adriane auf Naxos.
Sharleen has performed with various companies throughout New York, including L'Opéra Français de New York, American Lyric Theater, The Liederkranz Foundation, and Manhattan Concert Productions in venues including Carnegie Hall, the Goethe-Institut, the French Institute Alliance Française, the University Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Polish Consulate.
While at Mannes, Sharleen was the recipient of both the Rita Russell and Graduate Division Scholarships. Earlier this year, she was awarded the Dr. Susan Bergholtz Memorial Award at the 49th Annual Liederkranz Foundation Competition and was a prizewinner in competitions held by the George London Foundation and the Licia-Albanese Foundation. She placed second at the Canadian Music Competition's 2008 International Stepping Stone, held in Quebec City, and was a prizewinner in the 2007 Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition. For the 2007-2008 school year, Sharleen was selected by the Metropolitan Opera Guild as a teaching artist-in-residence. She is also the coloratura soprano for American Lyric Theatre’s Composer Librettist Development Program, led by composer Mark Adamo.
Sharleen has sung in masterclasses and coachings with Deborah Voigt, Håkan Hagegård, Julius Rudel, Diana Soviero, Stuart Hamilton, and Marni Nixon and has sung under the baton of Paul Nadler, Timothy Redmond, André Thomas, and Brian DeMaris.. She studies with famed voice teacher Ruth Falcon, conductor Kamal Khan, and Metropolitan Opera coach Howard Watkins.
