Soprano
Praised for her “full voice and striking presence” soprano Emily Newton was a winner of the New York District Met Competition in 2006. This season Ms. Newton will join the Metropolitan Opera as Ortlinde in the new production of Wagner’s Ring. In the 2009-2010 season she performed the role of Mimì in a concert performance of La bohème with Sherman Symphony and this summer, Ms. Newton will perform the role of Micaëla in Carmen at Lake George Opera.
Ms. Newton's recent appearances include Fiordiligi at the New Jersey Opera Theater, the American Premiere of Walter Braunfuls’ Die Vögel, which was conducted by Julius Rudel at the Spoleto Festival USA, Magda Sorel (cover) in The Consul at Glimmerglass Opera, Frasquita in Carmen at Natchez Music Festival, and Aneska in Two Widows with Bronx Opera. In addition, Ms. Newton gave her second private recital for the Spoleto Festival USA while in Charleston, South Carolina. At home on the concert stage, she has performed excerpts of the roles of Violetta and Marschallin, as well as soprano solos in Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Debussy’s La Damoiselle Èlue, Beethoven’s Mass in C and 9th Symphony, Brahm’s Requiem, Elijah, The Creation and Schubert’s Mirjam’s Siegesgesang. Other complete roles have included Antonina, Donna Anna, Female Chorus, Giulietta, High Priestess, Rosina, Beatrice di Tenda and Mimì. Ms. Newton has also been heard in concert excerpts as Gilda, Marguerite and Marschallin.
As a charter member of the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute at the North Carolina School of the Arts, Ms. Newton received her Professional Artist Certificate and Masters Degree as a Fletcher Fellow. She completed her Bachelor of Music degree at University of North Texas. She has twice advanced to the Regional Finals of the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions and recently was a semi-finalist in the International Moniuszko Competition in Warsaw, Poland. In addition, she has been honored by the Dallas Opera Career Development Grant Competition, the Opera Guild of Charlotte Competition, and NATS Competition.
